One of our favorite times of the year is so close that we can almost taste it, literally.
Halloween is looked forward to all year round simply because we are all children at heart. The pure satisfaction of the opportunity to indulge in candy and dress in our silliest and scariest costumes are the major highlights to this holiday. But what kind of Halloween would it be, if we didn’t make time to binge watch our most anticipated and seasonal Halloween classics? With marathons such as 13 Nights of Halloween on the channel Freeform, it’s difficult to miss out on these holiday classics. But in case you do, here is a compiled list of a few must watch Halloween classics before the 31st arrives. It’s only necessary to start your marathon off right with a movie that truly embodies the spirit of Halloween, no other than director Kenny Ortega’s classic, Hocus Pocus.
Some of the most well-known witches, the Sanderson sisters, are resurrected on Halloween night in hopes to gain immortal life. Their wrath on adorable trick-or treaters and a black cat is rather comical, as we often find ourselves quoting lines from this movie all year round. Whether it’s Bette Midler’s (Winifred Sanderson) performance of I Put a Spell on You, or it’s humorous actors, it’s difficult to disregard this holiday classic at this time of year. Without sitting down and watching a Tim Burton classic is simply a halloween mistake, being that almost any of his films are appropriate for this holiday. The stop-motion animation of The Nightmare Before Christmas takes us through Jake Skellington, “The Pumpkin King’s,” well-known story of finding himself in Christmastown, with the intentions to recreate his very own Christmas.
Although this classic still generates the debate whether the movie remains a Christmas or Halloween classic, it’s creature’s, ghouls and haunting musical numbers makes it safe to say it’s a must watch for this halloween. It’s not unexpected for another Tim Burton classic to fall under this list, as Beetlejuice is another well-known Halloween comical, yet oddly strange and creepy, motion picture. The film’s couple Barbara and Adam die in a car accident, leaving them stuck haunting their residence unable to leave the house. In attempts to get their residents to leave, the couple finds themselves being terrorized by a rambunctious, yet dangerous spirit by the name of Betelgeuse.
Burton’s fascinating special effects, in addition to its universally popular scene of “Jump in the Line,” Beetlejuice is seemingly appropriate on our list of classics. What Halloween marathon would if be if us 90’s kids didn’t incorporate Disney’s classic Halloweentown into our list. This film gave us everything a kid could have ever wanted from a children’s Halloween franchise.
A teenage girl that discovers she’s a witch, an alternate universe where witches, skeletons, goblins, go to live, and a town square that’s centered around an oversized pumpkin, only screams the word’s “Halloween classic.” No matter what age you may be, this Disney masterpiece still remains to be one of the most anticipated and down-right loved movies of Halloween history. Although the movies that have been listed are rather comical and children friendly, The Blair Witch Project is a thrilling “sleep with the lights on” classic film, simply fitting to be in our list of must watch movies. The movie is filmed as if it is actual footage from students who are lost in the woods, seen to encounter some supernatural experiences. The way that shots of the movie are centered to be seen as realistic, bring in the right amount of shakiness to it as that element of surprise is constantly there.
Whether you are continually wondering when a witch might appear out of thin air and scare you, you’ll feel the chills that come with any classic Halloween horror film. It is safe to say that when October rolls around, Halloween is highly anticipated for the opportunity in buying the season’s most popular costumes, and it’s appropriate timing for binge eating your favorite candies.
But no Halloween can be complete without the annual sit down classic movie marathon. Whether your taste is comedy or horror, you’ll have no problem in choosing a classic that gets you in the spirit of all we love about Halloween.
