With the cool temperatures rolling in, it’s easy to say our goodbyes to summer as we welcome the season of changing colors and apple cider, gladly known as autumn.

With our favorite holidays approaching and significant change in weather, it’s easy to say that we anticipate this season all year round. Whether we’re taking pictures for our Instagram or simply gazing at the leaves from our car windows, we feel the sudden urge to venture outside the second fall begins. It’s only fitting that that we take advantage of our beautiful change in scenery and rejuvenate in nature's breathtaking change.   In order to make the best of these few short months, I have compiled a list of the five most anticipated fall traditions that are cheap and convenient within Connecticut. At the top of our list, is no other than traditional apple picking. What fall season would be complete if we didn’t head out in hopes of finding bulks of the most delicious and in-season fruit? Nothing is more enjoyable than being outdoors in perfect 60 degree weather with friends and family, surrounded by piles of leaves at your feet.

Being one of the most popular attractions in CT, Lyman Orchards in Middlefield has over 350 acres of pick-your-own orchards, beside an unbelievably breathtaking countryside that leaves you starstruck. Any afternoon is one to take the opportunity to visit this flawless New England autumn attraction, because no apple taste better than one you pick yourself. Where there is apple picking, pumpkin picking is close nearby, ranging at number two for our list of must-do fall activities.

Everyone knows that pumpkin is fall’s well-known trademark, seeming only appropriate that we take part in heading to a pumpkin patch ourselves this season. With so many beautiful farms in Litchfield County, finding a patch to pick is rather simple, one being Bunnell Farm in the town of Litchfield.

With the tastiest apple cider, flashlight maze, and family fun hayrides, this small town farm makes pumpkin picking seem almost necessary. Whether you’re set out to find Charlie Brown’s “greatest pumpkin,”or gather only a few to carve, its simply a tradition to no other than pick pumpkins at his time of year. Make sure to visit Bunnell Farm to experience the essence of autumn in Connecticut. Corn mazes never cease to fail in fall traditions, coming it at number three on our season’s list. Being mixed up and confused in a corn maze is not only just amusing, but may be the only time getting “lost” has ever been so fun. What better way to experience this thrill at one of Connecticut's most popular corn mazes, located at Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford.

Partnered with the Beardsley Zoo, Bishop has created a maze in design of a red panda, with trivia questions guiding your way out. With admission priced at 6 dollars a person, you can get yourself lost from now until October 30th. Whether you venture as a pair or in a large group, corn mazes are the ideal way to spend an autumn afternoon in one of New England's most profound seasons. Almost everyone agrees that hiking is a major fall attraction, being number four on our list of autumn traditions. The best way to absorb the scenic beauty of the season is to simply walk outdoors through all nature has to offer. No other than Kent Falls in Litchfield County, is the ideal outdoor experience under the autumn leaves.

The most obvious feature of Kent Falls is, of course, the series of waterfalls. Fall foliage season is an exceptional time to enjoy this area, being its exceptional scenic qualities. If you’re interested in a relaxing and gorgeous outdoor experience in the fall air, visiting Kent Falls is the perfect destination. Last but not least on our autumn agenda is no other than a classic hayride, but with a slight twist. If you’re looking to add a bit more halloween adventure to your experience, a haunted hayride is the best attraction for you. Legends of Fear is the largest haunted farm attraction in all of Connecticut.

Their signature haunted hayride takes you through over one and half miles of pure darkness and chilling features, such as countless creatures aimed to scare you throughout your experience. Being that halloween is one of the first things that come to mind when we think of fall, any activity in relation to this holiday is a must-do. With this list in mind, it doesn’t matter if you’re on a budget this season. These adored fall traditions are local and inexpensive, while still giving the true essence to the season we all know and love in our home of New England.
